Parts And Pieces Of An AC Unit
Wondering what components are essential in an air conditioning system? Here are some of the major and minor parts and pieces:
Major Parts
Evaporator Coil
The first major piece is the evaporator coil. This is the part of the system that holds liquid refrigerant. This coil converts refrigerant into gas and extracts heat and humidity from the air. This part is often attached to either your furnace or is located on the inside of your air handler.
Condenser
The second major piece is the condenser, which works in tandem with the evaporator coil. These two parts work together to convert the evaporated refrigerant back into a liquid and release heat outside. This is the part of your unit that you see situated outside your home, usually on the side of the house.
Compressor
The third piece is the compressor. This part is what pressurizes the refrigerant in the system under pressure to concentrate and heat up the chemicals. This is a vital and often more expensive part of your unit.
Minor Parts
Blower
Also known as the fan, this component pushes the air through your ductwork and circulates cooled air throughout your home as well as pull warm air in for re-cooling. Although this is listed as a minor part, it plays a large role in the way your system cools your home.
Air Filters
Filters collect allergens, dust and other airborne contaminants to protect your respiratory health and improve your indoor air quality. It’s important to remember to have these changed frequently to ensure your system is performing at its highest. Clogged air filters can cause poor indoor air quality and increase the risk for damage to occur to your system.
Thermostat
Your thermostat is a device that monitors your indoor temperatures and signals your AC unit to turn on and off. With a thermostat, you’re able to set your desired indoor air temperature and your system will work to retain that temperature for you. This is an important aspect of your AC unit as it is the part that you are in the most control of!
Refrigerant
Refrigerant chemicals are vital to air conditioning units. A refrigerant’s job is to travel through all of the different parts of your air conditioner while changing from a low-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid. As it’s doing this, it extracts heat from the air inside your home and transfers it outside!
How Does Air Conditioning Work?
Need an example of a typical AC cycle? No problem! Most air conditioning units follow these four steps:
Step 1- Your thermostat recognizes that your house is too hot and turns your AC unit on.
Step 2- The refrigerant inside your evaporator coil begins to absorb the heat inside and cool the air down.
Step 3- Your fan circulates the cool air through your home’s ductwork.
Step 4- The heat trapped in your refrigerant is funneled outside.
